The General And His Lady
Richard (Butch) Neal met and married his wife Kathy in 1967. Shortly thereafter, this young couple began a “lifetime” in the Marine Corps. Butch doing what he was ordered to do and Kathy doing what military spouses have done for hundreds of years – serve in silence and keep the family growing and moving forward. Explaining why Dad or Mom are missing holidays and major life events. Moving from town to town and home to home. Never owning your house. Never complaining.
Butch rose to become a 4 start Marine general and Assistant Commandant of the Corps. Oh, and he won 2 silver stars during two tours in Vietnam (our country's 3rd highest award for valor). Read his book, “What Now Lieutenant.” Serving during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf War as the Deputy Director of Operations. General Neal was tapped by General Schwarzkopf to do the daily brief to the national press on the status of the effort. He became the de facto voice of the military, appearing daily on television and radio. As a salute, when he returned home, he was invited and accepted an invitation to throw out an opening pitch in Fenway Park. Of course it was the 4th of July and the Boston Pops Orchestra played Stars and Strips Forever.
Butch and Kathy retired and made 11 4th Street SE on Capitol Hill their first home after the Corp. The Hill is richer for having them as neighbors and friends. Butch continued to volunteer in the community and to mentor many of our neighbors. Butch was always there to give a hand to someone in need. I am proud to have called this unassuming and patriotic family my friends. One disclaimer: the American flag has flown proudly in front of this home for 25 years and last week I replaced it for the next 25 years. Semper Fi my friend.
